By Danielle Paine Reminder Assistant Editor LONGMEADOW School Business Director Carol J. Cash, resigned with the School Committee's permission to return to her previous position as head bookkeeper for the school department in July. Cash, who has been an employee of the Longmeadow schools for 24 years, was given a leave of absence from her bookkeeping duties in order to fill the vacant business director's slot in September 2005. She cited understaffing as the main reason behind the decision. "It was a very difficult decision but basically we're understaffed and I am working about 12 to 16 hours per day," Cash said. "I basically resigned so they would hire the staff we need." Superintendent of Schools E. Jahn Hart approved the move and is asking that next year's budget include additional funding for a bigger business department staff. Hart explained that a reorganization, budget cuts and numerous retirements have caused the shortage. "She has done an outstanding job but understandably she is ready to get her life back," Hart said. "I anticipate that we will begin advertising soon, going through the searching process and interviewing." Although Cash asked for the transfer as soon as possible, Hart explained that Cash will not be moved or replaced until July 1, the start of the new fiscal year. "I basically want a life back," Cash said. "For the last 16 months I haven't had a life and I've even had to cancel vacations; it's just been a long hard road." Cash had replaced Interim Business Director Tom Caliento, who filled the position for less than year. Prior to Caliento, Steven Nembirkow held the title for two years. "My heart is here because I love the school system and I've put so much of myself into it," Cash said. "This was a learning experience and I'm glad I did it." |
