Church plans Day of Remembrance

Longmeadow As the fourth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks approaches, First Church of Christ in Longmeadow is planning a Day of Service and Remembrance that will provide concrete ways to express faith, share solidarity as a community, and remember the many acts of compassion that followed Sept. 11, 2001.

The Day of Service and Remembrance was inspired by "One Day's Pay," a national program to establish Sept. 11 as a day of service.

It will include a memorial service in First Church's Memorial Garden at 8:30 a.m., and community work projects beginning at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Work sites will include the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Springfield, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Council on Aging. More than 125 people are expected to participate.

Participants may also donate blood to the Red Cross, which will visit First Church on Saturday, Sept. 10, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.; donate money to local charities; purchase bracelets that will benefit the "Families of September 11" organization; and purchase tee-shirts commemorating the day and benefiting First Church mission projects.

The committee organizing First Church's activities hopes to acknowledge the 9/11 tragedy "not by rekindling memories of hate, but rather by remembering what it means to be unified in collective compassion for all those who need a helping hand."

Community members are invited to join the Day of Service and Remembrance by calling the church office at 567-6287.
