EAST LONGMEADOW — For the 37th year, the public will gather at East Longmeadow High School, 180 Maple St. to hear local musicians from around the region. The weekly concerts are free and hosted by the Rotary Club.
“We always hear, ‘Who’s playing this year?’ and ‘When are the concerts?’” said Kevin Cook, the Rotary Club’s chair of concerts and summer events. It’s definitely something people look forward to.”
Most of the bands are based in New England, specifically in Western Massachusetts. There are three bands playing the concert series for the first time this year — Brass Attack of Springfield, 91 South and East Longmeadow’s own 7Roads Band. “We basically have every decade of music from the 1960s to current,” Cook said.
In addition to new bands, this year’s firsts will also include a Family Fun Night with games and activities from 6-6:45 p.m. at the high school, organized by The East Longmeadow Recreation Department.
The concert series is funded with a grant from the East Longmeadow Cultural Commission and individual bands are sponsored by various businesses in town. Work on the concert series for the next year begins as soon as the current year’s concerts end. “It’s definitely a lot of work,” with “a lot of volunteers from the Rotary Club.”
The Rotary Club also hosts a carnival at Center Field from June 30 to July 3, and presents fireworks after the July 3 concert. The concerts take place on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m., beginning June 28.
The Rotary Club recommends concert goers bring a blanket or chair to sit on. Concessions and refreshments will be available for purchase. In case of inclement weather, the rain date takes place on Thursday of the same week. For more information, visit www.elrotaryclub.org.”
