Friends of Storrs Library seek books for 15th annual sale

Date: 8/9/2023

LONGMEADOW — The Friends of the Storrs Library will be hosting its 15th annual book sale on Sept. 8-10 at the Community House at 735 Longmeadow St.

Board member and Co-Chair for the book sale Alison Farkas said, “This is currently our longest running fundraising event. Our annual book sale brings people together who love to read and share their love of reading. From start to finish we rely on our community to help make it happen; with donations of books and time.”

The Friends will begin accepting drop-off donations at the Community House on Aug. 12 through Sept. 1, Monday through Friday during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Friends will also be hosting drive-thru drop-offs three consecutive Saturdays — Aug. 12, 19 and 26 — from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with the help from Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts and for those who would like a hand.

The Friends are accepting used books in fair or good condition with no mold or water damage. No dictionaries, encyclopedias, text books, bibles, out-of-date travel guides, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes or games will be accepted, but the group will accept puzzles.

The Friends Of Storrs Library was started in 1994. They’re not part of the library, but a not-for-profit group created to raise money for the library. Its mission is to raise funds to enhance the library’s collection, purchase the museum passes and support special events at Storrs Library. Money is raised through dues, special events like the annual book sale, and with books and merchandise available for sale at the library. As a board member, Farkas said they brainstorm interesting ways to get the community involved to help raise money for the library. Last year, FOSL pledged $20,000 to the library, over $8,000 of that money came from their book sale; this year they’re hoping to make t$10,000 from the event.

“We always have so many people tell us how much they love the book sale,” Farkas responded. “With unique one-of -a-kind books, to board books to early readers for the kids to the latest best sellers. You never know what you’ll find and it’s all to support Storrs library. Each year our sales get better and better and this year we’re hoping to keep our streak going.”
