LONGMEADOW — Longmeadow residents celebrated First Responder Night at Williams Middle School on Aug. 16. People visited booths staffed by members of the Longmeadow Police and Fire departments, as well as the Enfield Police Department, K9 training companies and civic organizations. Children had their faces painted and took home balloon art, while parents snapped photos of them at wooden stands with police and firefighter themes. Food trucks from Pour Things Coffee and Batch Ice Cream were on site for refreshments. Longmeadow Police Sgt. Amanda VanBuskirk and officer Matthew Frydrk, and their respective K9s, Reuben and Marvin, were joined by West Springfield Officer John McCarthy and K9 Rado, and Easthampton Sgt. Andrew Beaulieu and K9 Gino for a demonstration of how police dogs are used in the field. While First Responder Night was originally scheduled for Aug. 15, the possibility of inclement weather caused the event to be moved to its rain date. A LifeStar emergency helicopter had been scheduled to visit the event but was unable to land.
