Longmeadow Active membership in the Longmeadow Lions Club is dwindling. Dick Holmes, membership chair, is hoping that the spirit of charity will shine in others and entice them to join so they can continue endeavors that serve the community.

This spring the club helped Longmeadow High School Key Club students purchase two Automated External Defibrillators for the school. Costs were approximately $1,960 each, with the Lions purchasing one and the Key Club raising funds for the other.

Parent Advisory Council member Michelle Meth brought it to the Lions' attention that there was a need for defibrillators at the school. She told The Reminder that the high school is a nucleus for town and board meetings. She also mentioned that having a defibrillator around for its student athletes is valuable.

"They contacted me and we had our members go over there and talk with Vesta Brown, [dean of students]," Holmes said. "We contacted a representative from the company that makes these defibrillators and he gave us all of the particulars and we were able to identify as to which was the best one."

It is support like this that the Lions Club is founded on and they need members to keep it going. The Club currently has 18 members but only nine are active.

"We're trying to approach and get some former members back or baby boomers that are just retiring and young people too," Holmes explained. "Then we're going to go after neighbors for volunteers. We can't do anything without the members."
