LONGMEADOW Perhaps no one knows the value of town libraries more than local authors.

For this reason and a rash of requests for this special guest, the Friends of the Storrs Library are hosting, "An Evening with Elinor Lipman," March 31, 7 - 9 p.m. at the Storrs Library.

A short reading from the Northampton author's newest novel, "My Latest Grievance," will be followed by a discussion, book signing and dessert donated by Bon Vivant's. This long-awaited event will be the group's major fund-raiser this year to support the services of the town library.

"I'm really looking foreword to meeting her in person, she seems like such an interesting person," O'Connor said. "The reason we contacted her is because the librarians have been asked if we could get Elinor Lipman."

Lipman is famed for her witty romantic comedies, one of which ("Then she Found me") is currently being turned into a major motion picture starring Helen Hunt. All of her books are available at the Storrs Library though O'Connor joked that the are in high demand.

"I've heard that she is a wonderful speaker," O'Connor said. "And it's always fun to meet an author of a book you've read and find out a little bit about them."

The Friends group works with the library's board directors by providing funds to meet shortcomings and to enhance programming and resources. Since beginning in 1994, they have raised more than $100,000 in donations.

"The library is a great resource and a great cultural place to go," O'Connor said. "Without the [donated] money, I don't know if they would be able to do it all on their own."

Tickets to the event are for sale in advance, priced at $25 for F.O. S. L. members and $30 for non-members. For more information or to RSVP, call O'Connor at 567-7127.
