LONGMEADOW – After more than eight years, votes at Town Meeting and last-minute delays, the Longmeadow Adult Community Center is open to the public.
Town Manager Lyn Simmons cut the ribbon at the grand opening on Nov. 4, surrounded by members of the center’s board of directors as well as state Rep. Brian Ashe and state Sen. Eric Lesser, both residents of the town.
“Never have I been more proud to be from Longmeadow,” Ashe told the crowd that had gathered for the ceremony and a first look at the facility. He said the way people treat their elderly is a reflection of the community.
Lesser told the group, “Councils on Aging are really vital parts of our infrastructure. He cited nutrition, wellness and early intervention as public needs that these town departments serve. Lesser thanked Mary Beth Bergeron, director of the Longmeadow Adult Community Center Fund, who has been a driving force behind the project.
“It has been a long journey to get here,” Bergeron acknowledged.
