Longmeadow middle school students work to fight pollution in the community

Date: 5/19/2022

LONGMEADOW – Evan Eves, Jason Nguyen, Henry St. Pierre and Robin Lim are all eighth graders at Glenbrook Middle School. For their recently assigned civics class project, the group is working to bring awareness to the issue of pollution and help clean up the town.

According to Eves, the project asked students to think about a problem in society and take multiple steps to try and either bring awareness to it or help prevent it.

They chose to do both by reaching out to local news organizations such as Reminder Publishing to help spread the word and also organizing park cleanups.

Eves said that he thought this was a great topic to choose for the project given its relevance.

“I find pollution and science really interesting, so I just felt like pollution was a good topic to choose and it’s very relevant for the time period because it’s a major problem right now,” he said.

The team already went out to clean parks around the Longmeadow area and said they may do additional cleanings as well.
The project is due in June, but Eves said they will continue fighting this issue even after it ends.

“We plan to continue fighting pollution on our own time,” he said.

The group has loved being able to help their community in this way.
“I like giving back to the community because it makes me feel good,” said Eves.

The team said that the hardest part of the project has been coordinating everyone’s schedules to plan cleanups, but that they have otherwise enjoyed it.

They hope that they will be able to encourage the community to help and fight pollution in their own ways on their own time.

“I’m hoping that people will do their own part to try to prevent pollution,” said Eves. “Globally, pollution is a problem, and we want our community to help with that and to do something to help.”
