LONGMEADOW Two weeks after the initial vote, Proposition 2 1/2 has officially passed. The recount that took place Nov. 20 cemented the override's passing with a final tally of 4,677 votes -- 2,341 for, 2,335 against.

Originally, the proposition passed by only four votes. The recount found that it actually passed by six.

"There was a possibility of a counting error the first time," Town Clerk Katherine Ingram said.

The recount began at 9 a.m. and took "only an hour and a half" to complete, according to Ingram.

Geoff Weigand, chair of the School Committee, upon hearing the override was still accepted, said, "The key thing is the results are similar. It's a vindication of the voting process. It's affirming and reassuring.

"We're lucky that it passed," he added. "The boards need to make prudent decisions now."

Weigand said he was humbled by the commitment shown by the School Committee, the Select Board and the Finance Committee to do the right thing for the town.

He also thanked all the voters who came out, regardless of how they voted.

"I encourage everyone to come out to the town meeting," Weigand said. Taking place Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Longmeadow High School gymnasium, the town meeting will allocate the funds created by Proposition 2 1/2.

"I think it will be a good town meeting," he stated. "The folks of this town are really paying attention. It will be democracy in its most pure form."
