LONGMEADOW — Residents may now begin registering their children for kindergarten.

According to a news release on its Web site, the Longmeadow School District has already sent home registration forms to residents interested in enrolling their children in kindergarten for the 2011-2012 school year.

Any resident who did not receive a registration form my obtain one at the Longmeadow Public Schools central office, located at Wolf Swamp Road School.

In order to be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, according to School Committee policy.

The School Committee has also approved the district's calendar for the 2011-2012 school year, according to a news release.

Classes will begin on Sept. 1, a Thursday, for grades 1 through 12 and will take place on Sept. 2, a Friday. There will be no classes on the following Monday, Sept. 5, in observance of Labor Day. Classes will resume on Sept. 6.

Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes will begin after the Labor Day holiday on Sept. 7.

If the district escapes the winter without a single snow day, the anticipated final day of school is June 18, 2012. The calendar also includes five make-up days for possible inclement weather or other unforeseen closings. Should all of those days be exhausted, the school year would end on June 25, 2012.

The holiday break will take place from Dec. 23 through Jan. 2, 2012. February break will take place from Feb. 20 through Feb. 24, 2012 and spring break is slated for April 16 to 20, 2012.

Religious holidays not included in holiday breaks that will be observed with no school include Rosh Hashanah on Sept. 29 and Good Friday on April 6, 2012. Yom Kippur falls on a Saturday in 2011 and will not require time off from school.

The school day will remain as it was throughout the 2010-2011 school year with elementary classes taking place from 8:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. and middle school classes being conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. High school classes will take place from 7:39 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
