LONGMEADOW The Sport and Event Management Class offered at Longmeadow High School is only in its second year and so far giving back to the community is part of its curriculum.

This fall, 80 students signed up to learn the basic ins and outs of event planning and on Oct. 17 those skills were put to the test with the first ever Fall Festival hosted at Blueberry Elementary School.

Supervised by teachers John Pantuosco and Vivian Morse, high school students spent a warm afternoon hosting numerous games and crafts in the athletic field at Blueberry Hill.

Senior Gavin Parker said the class worked on the the project for three weeks, learning "how to set up events, barriers and manage crowd control."

"We wanted to do something for the community," Pantuosco, who teaches one of the two Sport and Event Management classes, explained. "Every kid has a group, booth or activity."

Pantuosco said that students communicated with teachers and students via e-mail in the weeks leading up to the event. Students also have doubled as staff at athletic events hosted at Longmeadow stadium. These trials give them an opportunity to utilize management skills taught to them by day.

High school junior John Emma enjoyed his time with his Blueberry Hill team and chatted with The Reminder as his group took a break. He said, so far, the Fall Festival is the first big project his class has partaken in.

"I assigned all partners and told them a little about myself," Emma said providing a rundown of his initial meeting with the joyous students. "They're a great group of kids."

A past member of the high school's cross country team, Emma said he enjoys sports and looks forward to pursuing a career in the field.

This is not the first time the Sport and Event Management program has launched a community project. Last year Pantuosco and Morse oversaw the "5K Stroll for Strength," a race in honor of the late East Longmeadow High School senior Brianna Donovan and Bob Pasani, a substance abuse coordinator for the Longmeadow school district.
