Newcomers' Club to host open house for new residents

LONGMEADOW Moving to a new town can be a nerve wracking experience. There's a million things to do making sure you packed everything from your old home, unpacking everything in your new home, getting used to living in a new house, driving a new commute, picking a new grocery store and so forth. With all that going on, it might be easy to forget making new friends.

That's where the Longmeadow Newcomers' Club comes in.

Founded in 1963, the Newcomers' Club offers a variety of activities based on diverse interests for new female town residents, including a monthly card game of Euchre, a gourmet cooking club, a children's playgroup, a monthly book club and more. Additionally, the club hosts social events throughout the year, providing opportunities for spouses, significant others and the entire family to get involved, according to the club's Web site (www.longmeadow.org/newcomers/index.html).

This year, the club will be celebrating 45 years of forging friendships in Longmeadow. The club is made up of both brand new residents and those who have been in town a few years. Club member Christine Llewellyn said the average membership lasts about five years. Llewellyn has been a resident since May 2004.

"The club has been great," she told Reminder Publications. "Pretty much every friend I have in town I met through the group."

The club is inviting all newcomers to make friends at their open house on Sept. 10.

"I think joining the Newcomers' Club allows women new to the area the opportunity to make new friends, become more familiar with the town and just generally feel more connected with the community here," club member May Oh said.

She added that the club was personally very helpful for her. "When we moved here in 2005, we were new not just to the area, but to the country itself (since this was only our second year in the U.S.). Transitioning to our new lives here was quite a challenge, and I have to say that I was thrilled that there was a Newcomers' Club."

Llewellyn said the open house is meant to be a casual get together for those interested in joining the club. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served.

"I think attending the open house would be a great first step for those new in town to meet some of the old members and to learn a little more about the club and what it has to offer," Oh said.

To register for the open house, contact Llewellyn at 567-8589 by Sept. 5. Those interested in attending will be sent invitations with further details.
