New Day raises funds for natural disaster victims

LONGMEADOW New Day Church is only a few months old, but that hasn't stopped its congregation from getting started on missionary work as soon as possible.

Members are currently fundraising for victims of the cyclone that caused a catastrophe in Myanmar, where news reports have the death and missing persons toll up to 138,000. Donation funds are also being collected for those still recovering from the recent earthquake in China, where more than 60,000 have been declared dead.

New Day's young members chose to fundraise through AG Relief because 100 percent of donations go directly to the cause. They hope locals will contribute to their campaign and bring needed funds to two areas where rebuilding will be a slow and taxing process.

"It is just something that we feel very strong about, supporting any mission in foreign countries and this was just such an overwhelming devastation that we all wanted to do whatever we could to feel like we're contributing," Rachel Axtmann, New Day member, said.

She said they started fundraising around May 23 and have collected, so far, approximately $800.

"I think that the amount of devastation that occurred, I don't think we can even comprehend it. Millions are without shelter or water and we want to do our part to help those in dire need," Axtmann added.

There are multiple ways to give. New Day is accepting online donations on their Web site, www.newdaychurch.cc, at their church services at 735 Longmeadow St. (the next meeting is June 27 at 7 p.m.) or checks can be sent to to New Day Church at P.O. Box 405, West Springfield, MA 01090. All donations are tax deductible.
