LONGMEADOW The town of Longmeadow recently announced that it is seeking to fill a vacancy on its School Committee. Jim Nittoli, the member who left the committee, has accepted a position on the town's Finance Committee.

"We're thrilled for him," said Christine Swanson, vice-chair of the School Committee. "We are thankful for what he's done for the School Committee, and his new position ensures that he'll keep working with us in the future. It's a win-win situation."

Swanson also said that the committee hopes to have the vacancy filled by September, when school starts. A lot of people have expressed interest in the position, according to Swanson.

Applicants for the position should support the initiative of the School Committee and be able to help maintain fiscal responsibility. Their main goal should be the bettering of education for Longmeadow students.

"We have a strong committee, and the current members come from various backgrounds, including law, business and academia," Swanson said, "so we're looking for anyone who is interested."

Because the new member of the School Committee would be coming into the position mid-term, he or she will be appointed to the position until the annual town election in April 2008. Then, the Longmeadow citizens will vote on School Committee members for their next three-year terms.

While the Committee needs someone for the time being, Swanson said they're hoping that that person will consider staying on the committee through the election.

"We want someone who will work with us both now and in the future," she said. "Taking the position now will help him or her get acclimated to what we do and how we work."

Interested residents are encouraged to submit applications including their resumes to the Select Board office by Aug. 30 no later than 4 p.m. Applications are available online on the Select Board page of www.longmeadow.org or at the office, located at 20 Williams St. All applicants are required to attend an interview conducted jointly by the Select Board and the School Committee before consideration for the position.

Applications received after the Aug. 30 deadline will not be considered.
