Pneumonia shots available to Longmeadow seniors

LONGMEADOW The Longmeadow Board of Health will be holding a Pneumonia Immunization Clinic on Sept. 20, 10 a.m.-noon, at the nurse's office, Greenwood Center, 231 Maple Rd., Longmeadow.

This clinic is open to Longmeadow residents only who are 65 years of age or over or residents of any age who have chronic medical conditions. Individuals who are diabetics, who have asthma, cardiac, lung, or kidney diseases, or have any other medical condition, which suppresses immunity, are at high risk for complications related to pneumonia and are recommended to be immunized. The pneumonia shot does not need to be administered annually; generally, revaccination for pneumonia shots is only recommended for individuals who were vaccinated prior to age 65.

The pneumonia vaccination is free for individuals that are Medicare Part B and Medicare Part B HMO subscribers (e.g. Blue Care 65, the Tufts Health Pan "Secure Horizons" and the Harvard Pilgrim Plan "First Seniority"); bring your health insurance membership card to the clinic. The charge for all other individuals is $3.

A reservation for the pneumonia vaccination is required and may be made by calling the Longmeadow Board of Health at 565-4140. The deadline for reservations is Sept. 13.

If you are not a resident of Longmeadow, call your local Board of Health to get the locations, dates and times of pneumonia vaccination clinics in your community.
