Resident honored as Red Cross 'Hero'

LONGMEADOW Local Hero, Jonathan Smylie of Longmeadow, was honored along with 11 other local heroes for their acts of heroism at the fourth annual Hometown Heroes Breakfast hosted by the American Red Cross Pioneer Valley Chapter at the Basketball hall of fame on March 29.

Smylie was honored for his selflessness and quick action that saved a man's life. He was vacationing with his wife in Paris when his wife noticed a man jump into the Seine River off the bridge that they were standing on. Moments later Smylie realized that the man was drowning and immediately jumped into the Seine to rescue the man. Smylie was able to pull the man to safety, nearly drowning to get the man out alive.

The Hometown Heroes Breakfast was originally created by the Pioneer Valley chapter of the American Red Cross to remember the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001 and to celebrate the spirit of humanitarianism by honoring local individuals who have shown courage, kindness and unselfish character through their own acts of heroism here in the greater Springfield community.
