Rotary Club celebrates 10th Anniversary

LONGMEADOW The Rotary Club of Longmeadow recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary at its annual Charter Night. Along with a history of the Club's accomplishments over 10 years, Immediate Past President Jay Leib summarized the highlights of the work over the past two years:

Formal dedication of the Molly McEvoy Playground in Greenwood Park took place on May 6, 2006. Club members raised funds and built the playground from 1996- 1999.

Concerts in the Fall 2005 and Spring 2006 were held at the Longmeadow High School to raise money to refurbish the seats in the auditorium. Over $8000 was raised to accomplish this project.

An Interact Club was established at Longmeadow High School. This service club operates under the guidance of Rotarian Kevin Lonergan and has over 30 students actively involved in Community Work.

Two Food Drives were held to benefit Open Pantry.

The Longmeadow Rotary Scholarship was award to Longmeadow Senior Amanda Marsh.

Ongoing projects held in 2005 and 2006 also include: The Annual Blood Drive; Christmas baskets donated to the YWCA Women's Shelter; The Annual Golf Tournament held in conjunction with Longmeadow ABC.

The Club also sponsored three students to attend RYLA, Rotary's youth leadership seminar.

In addition $1000 was donated to the YWCA Shelter to establish their library.

Several awards were presented at Charter Night:

The Longmeadow Club presented the Paul Harris Award to Immediate Past President Jay Leib in recognition of his 2-year tenure and accomplishments.

The Gay family presented Harley Delue with the Paul Harris Award.

Rotarian Peter Benton presented the Paul Harris Award to his wife, Betsy Brigham Benton.

Club Awards were presented to Thomas Wheeler, Foy Miller, Kevin Lonergan and Gil Lefkovich for their dedication to the Club and its projects.

The slate of officers for 2006/ 2007 are: Gil Lefkovich, President; James Capurso, Vice President; Susan Dominick, Secretary; Aaron Bonner, Treasurer.
