School start time is up for debate

Date: 7/13/2017

LONGMEADOW – The Longmeadow School Committee met on June 27 and discussed a series of administrator reports, sub-committee reports, as well as new business, including the potential future change of Longmeadow High School’s start time.  The meeting also gave information regarding the middle school class size projection with a staffing update.

Vice Chair of the School Committee Russell Dupere said that the 2017-2018 school years start time will not be changing, however a change could be made in the future.

“The Committee is just studying the issue at this point,” Dupere said.

According to Dupere, the Longmeadow High School start time is being investigated due to research that has been conducted which indicates that a later start time for high school students can be beneficial to their learning.

“There are a few groups in Massachusetts that are looking at the issue, and we plan on reaching out to the to determine what they have found,” Dupere said.

Over the winter of 2016-2017 during the budget process the School Committee was faced with the current class size projection.

“The committee voted to cut three teachers at Williams Middle School due to the current enrollment figures,” Dupere said.
