Songwriter performs for families in Longmeadow

LONGMEADOW Songwriter and guitarist Jay Mankita will appear at Storrs Library on July 12, at 11 a.m. presenting a concert for children and their families.

Currently based in New England, Mankita is as well known for his music for children as he is for his adult performances.

He's been receiving kudos and attention from all corners of the folk and Americana music world, including Pete Seeger, who says of Jay: "Come hear this guy...I think he's one of the half dozen best songwriters today!"

An activist for social and environmental justice, Mankita is touring in a car running on recycled vegetable oil.He enjoys showing his car to the kids after the show, and talking about how every one of us can contribute to helping make a better world.

Mankita will present "The Day the Library Went Wild," an ecologically-themed concert featuring both funny and serious songs and stories, presented interactively through singing-along, guessing-along, sign language, and hand movements, so the audience really participates.

A masterful guitar player, he blends traditional acoustic blues, ragtime, and swing styles with a quirky, original feel.Children ages three and older are sure to be enchanted with his performance.
