LONGMEADOW – Matthew Regan is entering Longmeadow High School in the fall, but the 14-year-old already knows what he wants to do with his life. Play ice hockey.
“My goal is to go pro,” Regan told Reminder Publishing while he was at the Mini Chowder Cup tournament in Foxboro.
With 10 years of experience under Regan’s belt, he is making a name for himself. In early July, Regan played at the Hockey Night in Boston (HNIB) showcase tournament at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center and was selected for the national all-star team, on which he played center.
Regan plays an offensive position as a third defenseman. Rather than joining a municipal recreation team or play through Longmeadow Public Schools, he plays for MassConn United Elite, which consists of players from both Massachusetts and Connecticut.
“It’s way harder, but I like it,” Regan said, adding that it allows him to play against other teams in the Eastern Hockey Federation, as well as those from preparatory schools in the area. “I love competing,” he said.
While Regan also enjoys playing lacrosse, “I’m more committed to hockey,” he said. His goal is to play hockey throughout high school and in college. “I’d love to go pro.”
In the Mini Chowder Cup, Regan faced teams from as far south as Florida and as far north as Quebec, Canada. Regan said playing against the best teams in the country does not intimidate him. “I just play my game,” he said, “go hard, no matter who I play against.”
