LONGMEADOW Longmeadow High School sophomore Melanie Pascal didn't return from Israel this summer empty handed. She returned with five gold medals and three silver from the 17th World Maccabiah Games.

In swimming Pascal won gold for the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 200 Individual Medley, 400 Individual Medley, and 4 x 200 relay. She took home silver for the 200 back stroke, 100 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

The youngest of 17 girls selected to represent the United States in Israel, Pascal seemed modest when it came to her achievements. Her mother Renee joked that she didn't even think Pascal had put on all of her medals until she did so to pose for a photograph for Reminder Publications.

When asked what she enjoys about swimming, Pascal smiled and answered, "I like the competition and winning," she added, while her medals lay out on a table behind her.

Pascal took up swimming when she was six and plans to continue on to the college level when she graduates from high school.

While Pascal told Reminder Publications about her trip to Israel (her parents and brothers flew down separately), her mother sat to the side in the kitchen listening. She barely spoke except every now and then to elaborate on Pascal's achievements some of which Pascal seemed to shy to mention. It was evident that she was proud of Pascal. Later, when asked how she felt witnessing her daughter win in Israel, she simply said, "It was very impressive."

Pascal said her best event is the butterfly, which might explain why she's the Connecticut State Champion in the 100 and 200 meter butterfly.

And after all of this, she still finds time to play the alto sax in the school band.

"And she's the treasurer of her class," Renee added.
