LONGMEADOW With the entire globe now focusing on going green, children are learning at increasingly younger ages what they need to do to help save the planet. The basic rules are the same: turn off the water when you brush your teeth; turn off the lights when you leave a room; ride a bike or walk instead of riding in a car.

Storrs Library is asking its young visitors to look at recycling in a new way by reusing materials to create animal artwork during its "Junk-A-Rama" contest, open now through July 25.

"Artists of all ages are invited to make wild animals from all recycled materials," Children's Librarian Martha Richard explained. "Search the trash to reuse and recycle whatever you can, and add paint or glitter if you want."

There are only two rules that must be observed in the contest animals must be made from reused materials and they must be under three feet tall. Entries will be judged on creativity and ingenuity by a variety of judges, according to Richard. Categories will be separated by age.

"Everybody who walks in the door [with a entry] will get a prize," Richard noted. Prizes include T-shirts and gift certificates for Subway, Friendly's and other local businesses.

The "Junk-A-Rama" contest is part of the Wild Reads at Your Library summer reading program at Storrs Library, and the staff came up with the unique contest.

"We did something similar four or five years ago with an environmental theme," Richard said. "This contest ties into this year's theme because it's not only about animals' environments but looking at how we have limited resources on our planet as well. This is a perfect opportunity to focus on [our planet]. The two themes tie in together perfectly."

And, while the contest is aimed mostly toward those participating in the summer reading program, there is no age limit on who can enter.

"I'd love to have a lot of entries," Richard said. "If we get 10 or 15, I'd be thrilled." Entry forms are available now at Storrs Library.

"Junk-A-Rama" entries must be at the library by 5 p.m. on July 25. Winners of the contest will be announced on July 30.
