Waste Reduction Program begins July 1

LONGMEADOW Longmeadow's new Waste Reduction Program will begin on July 1.

"This new program is really very simple. Each household may put out one 36-gallon bag or barrel each week of trash," explained Irwin Pers, chairman of Longmeadow's Recycling Commission. "Any additional trash must be disposed of in special Town of Longmeadow trash bags. Recycling is unlimited. The program is designed to reduce trash and increase recycling."

The special trash bags are now available at five retail stores in Longmeadow, including Big Y, both CVS stores, Armata's and Brightwood Hardware. The bags sell for $1.75 each and are sold in rolls of five bags per roll. Excess trash not placed in special town of Longmeadow trash bags will not be picked up.

Residents may place an unlimited amount of recycling at the curb each week, according to the recycling calendar. Recyclables should be in the blue recycling bins (available free at the Department of Public Works) or in barrels clearly marked for recycling.

The white ban around the barrel is acceptable but a bright "recycling decal" works best. Those are also available free at DPW and town hall. Any boxes left for recycling should be broken down and cut to a size that is manageable and no bigger than three-feet square.

Call the DPW at 567-3400 for more information about the new Waste Reduction Program.
