By Lori O'Brien Correspondent SOUTH HADLEY Whether you are a beginner or seasoned golfer, the Women's Day at The Orchards Golf Club promises a unique event for women interested in learning more about the game. The daylong event, hosted by Fran Johnson's Golf and Racquet of West Springfield and presented by Health New England, is planned on May 22 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. "You will have a good day," said Cindy Johnson, owner of Fran Johnson's during an interview with Reminder Publications. This is the second year that Fran Johnson's is hosting the event and Johnson said she is hopeful at least 100 women will take advantage of the unique learning experience for both new and experienced players. Regardless of one's playing ability, the instructions learned from the breakout sessions will take players to the next level, according to Johnson. For women who may be intimidated about picking up a golf club, Johnson said this event will "take the intimidation out of the game." Not convinced? Johnson added that by the end of the day beginning golfers will be confident enough to play a scramble event. Golf is a versatile sport since it can be a fun day out with friends or used as a business tool, said Johnson, adding that a lack of time or money should not be hurdles to learning the sport. Breakout sessions will be limited to 10 women per group and groups will be determined by one's playing ability and experience. For women who do not have clubs, they will be provided. Workshops will include an introduction to golf and golf etiquette, tee shots, hitting to a target, chipping, putting, bunkers, course management and club fitting. The day begins with registration and continental breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., followed by a welcome and introduction of LPGA/PGA professionals and the morning sessions. Keynote speaker Jane Frost, LPGA T&CP, will be featured at the luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. "My philosophy of teaching is to honor the uniqueness of each individual who stands before me," said Frost. "Each student brings with them a wealth of talent that simply needs to be uncovered and clearly defined." Frost has been honored by Golf magazine as one of the "Top 100 Teachers in America" eight times, and twice by Golf for Women magazine as one of the "Top 50 Teachers." A regular contributor to the Boston Globe, Frost has also appeared on the Golf Channel's Academy Live Show. She is lead instructor for the LPGA's National Education Program as well as director of instruction at the Jane Frost Golf School. Afternoon sessions are planned from 1 to 4 p.m., followed by a reception and distribution of player gift bags from 4 to 5 p.m. All proceeds raised from the event will benefit Rays of Hope, which raises funds for breast cancer research as well as offers community education and outreach services.
