Donations needed for local troops in North Africa

By Alex Ross

SPRINGFIELD- "Support the troops" is a phrase that is now often heard. But it is usually meant in regards to the current war in Iraq. But the efforts of a local Agawam mother, whose son is a Marine stationed in another troubled land, is taking action and asking for help in her son's mission.

Pam Ayotte has begun a humanitarian drive that seeks donations for residents in a North African country (which can't be disclosed for security reasons), where her son Lance Corporal Stefan Ayotte, 21, is stationed with his unit MASS 6 from Westover Air Base, to provide security and humanitarian relief.

"Mass 6 Westover Marine's Humanitarian Project" will gather donations of school supplies, simple safe toys and sports equipment, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, light clothes, and other items, to distribute to the impoverished locals. Pam said that the situation in that country is one of great trouble.

" It's an impoverished country," Pam said. "The boys who are over there are interacting [with the natives], but they have nothing to give them."

Ayotte arrived with his unit in the African country about six weeks ago, and his correspondence with his family as well as a newsletter from the unit's commander, told of heart wrenching poverty.

"My son's commander sent a newsletter stressing that it is easier for the Marines to do their duties when they can establish friendships with the local people," explained Pam. "The best way to do that is to help to meet those people's needs."

Money will also be accepted in addition to soaps, toothpastes, school supplies, and toys, to help cover the cost of shipping. So far about $71 has been raised, along with some crayons, pencils, and toothpaste.

Donations can be dropped off at Gus & Paul's in Tower Square in Springfield, where Pam works, or there is a box at the American Legion Post 185 in Agawam where donations can also be accepted.
