Italian center will host Columbus Day ceremonies, celebrations

SPRINGFIELD The Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts recently announced several events to celebrate Columbus Day and Italian-Americans.

Italian Cultural Center member and volunteer Rinaldo Santamaria explained to The Reminder that the festivities will begin Oct. 3 with the raising of the Italian flag at Springfield City Hall. Attendees of the flag-raising ceremony will be treated to a performance by the Italian Stars and will be invited to sing the national anthems of both the U.S. and Italy.

On Oct. 7, The Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts will present the Serviam Award Winners for 2005, Laura Giuggio and Davide Villani, at an awards dinner to be held at the Sheraton Hotel, Springfield (Monarch Place).

There will be a social hour at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m., followed by music and dancing.

The Serviam Award, which honors the work done by Italian- Americans in both their churches and communities, is the highest honor given by the Italian Cultural Center.

On Oct. 9 there will be a special 8:30 a.m. Columbus Day mass at Mount Carmel Church followed by a march to the Columbus monument for a wreath ceremony, then a reception at the Italian Cultural Center, 11 Acushnet Ave.
