Italian Cultural Center announces award winners

SPRINGFIELD The Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts announced last week the recipients of its annual Serviam Awards. The Awards are given each year to Italian-Americans who are active in their faith and in the community.

This year's recipients are Laura (Cipriani) Giuggio of Agawam and Davide Mario Villani of Springfield.

Giuggio, a native of Springfield, served the community actively for more than 40 years. She graduated from the High School of Commerce and was employed for many years in retail in New York, where she earned an Achievement and Character Award from the New York Women's Club.

In the Springfield area she was chief buyer for many years at the popular Kings department store, and received an award as Ombudsman to which today she is still active.

She has a celebrated singing voice and performed many times with the Springfield Opera Company. Her volunteerism continues today for many local groups.

Villani, also a native of Springfield, has served the community all of his adult life. He is a graduate of Cathedral High School and of the University of Massachusetts. With passing the Certified Public Accountants Exam he received a gold medal for having the highest grade in the state of Massachusetts.

Villani has been audit manager for two international accounting firms for 20 years, and has spent another 14 as business advisor for the Springfield Public School System. He is active in many organizations, including UNICO, the Italian Cultural Center, Sons of Italy and Massachusetts Grand Lodge, as well as serving the Italian Cultural Center as treasurer.

Giuggio and Villani will be honored and will receive their plaques during Columbus Day festivities this October.
