SPRINGFIELD Patrons of the Springfield Jewish Community Center (JCC) now have a convenient way to access nutritious snacks as well as fitness equipment while on the go at the jcc FIT stuff store.

"The idea of the store was to offer a convenience for members and guests to purchase items related to fitness," Sally Schneider, co-chair of the committee who developed the store concept, said during an interview with Reminder Publications. Schneider co-chaired the committee with Betsy Bertuzzi. Other committee members included Jenna Goodman, Hilary Suher, Amy Ratner, and staff members Stu Greene, health and physical education director, and Elizabeth Lenart, fitness director.

Schneider noted that committee members felt if they could provide "quality items at reasonable prices," patrons would think of shopping at the store and support the center's programs at the same time.

All profits made from purchases benefit children in the center's health and fitness programs through scholarships.

"Another goal was to promote a healthy alternative to snacks for people on the run," Schneider said.

The trophy case that is in memory of Samuel "Popeye" Shapiro houses the varied fitness performance clothing, boxing gloves, squash balls and racquet balls, gloves, swimming gear and other equipment appropriate for all ages. From tie-dye T-shirts and yoga mats to heart rate monitors and ipods for swimmers, there is something for everyone's taste.

Food items offered are kosher, as well as having a low-fat and low-sodium content, and are also low-sugar. Nutritionist Kathy Roberts, RD, LDN, was consulted in the selection of all food items to ensure the products contain the "healthiest ingredients available" on the market, according to Schneider. Powerade, multigrain chips, apple and pear chips, assorted fitness bars and, of course, Vitamin Water, are among the varied food and beverage offerings, all reasonably priced from $1 to $1.50 each.

As a bonus to patrons, the center's fitness staff offers consultations with individuals who want to improve their lifestyle.

"Their goal is to help individuals of all ages understand the benefits of fitness, nutrition, balance, flexibility, strength and endurance," Schneider added. "They help individuals find the correct balance by tailoring programs to suit the individual utilizing group fitness classes, personal training and workout programs."

Store offerings may be purchased during the regular hours of the center which include Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays through March 15, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and after March 15, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
