SPRINGFIELD There appears to be a mayoral race looming for the fall in the City of Homes.

Both incumbent Mayor Charles Ryan and long-time Springfield City Councilor Domenic Sarno have announced their intentions to share their plans for future elected office.

Incumbent Mayor Ryan has sent a letter to many supporters inviting them to a campaign event on April 12.

Ryan's letter reads, "I have found that my life has been a series of crossroads and that, at this time, I am coming to another one. In this election year of 2007, I must make a decision whether to not to run for a third terms as your mayor.

"I have always regarded this office and the relations between us as a sacred trust. It is the reason I ran in the first place and it is why I have continued to serve as mayor until now.

"I want to share my decision and the reasons for it with you."

Ryan will be hosting his event at 7 p.m., April 12 at The Cedars at 419 Island Pond Rd. in Springfeild.

Sarno told Reminder Publications on Wednesday that he will "make an announcement finalizing his plans and his intentions" during the first week of May.

He has not set a time or place for the event.

Sarno has served on the City Council and is the executive director of the South End Community Center. He has also served in positions in the administration of Mayor Mary Hurley and in the Hampden County District Attorney's office.

Ryan and Sarno served together on the Finance Control Board when Sarno was president of the City Council.
