McCarthy named Irish Elk of the Year

The Irish Committee of the Springfield Lodge of Elks #61 is proud to announce that Patrick M. McCarthy of Springfield has been named the 2008 Irish Elk of the Year.

Born and raised in the North End of Springfield and moving to Hungry Hill in his teen years, McCarthy traces his third generation Irish-American roots back to his grandfather Timothy McCarthy of County Kerry and his grandmother Esther Swords of County Kildare. He is the son of Jean and the late Timothy McCarthy. He has two sisters and two brothers.

A 1973 graduate of Technical High School, McCarthy attended Springfield Technical Community College and then graduated from the Morse School of Business in Hartford, Conn. After graduating he began employment at Combustion Engineering in Windsor, Conn., and then worked at Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks, Conn., and has been at IBM since 1992 holding various positions in information technology services. He volunteered at the Greater Hartford Open for IBM in the mid to late 1990s.

He has been an active member of the John Boyle O'Reilly Club since 2004 where he is involved with the Bachelor Supper Committee and the Irish Festival.

McCarthy joined the Springfield Lodge of Elks #61 in 1979 and is currently serving on the Board of Trustees. He joined the Irish Committee in 1995 and has been an active member serving on numerous committees. He is a waiter for the Irish Nationality Night and chairman of the program book. He was elected vice-chairman of the Irish Committee in 2002 and general chairman of the Irish Committee in 2003. He has been previously recognized with Irish Committee Honors for his dedication and effort by his selection as the 2000 recipient of the Steven K. Duclos Award and the Joseph Q. Williams Award in 2004. McCarthy is also active on the Entertainment Committee and the National Hoop Shoot.

He has been married to Lee Beaulieu McCarthy for 31 years and they are the proud parents of son Blaine and daughter Meghan.
