SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield School Committee recognized long-time teacher Burt Freedman at its March 1 meeting for his selection as the 2012 Micah in Community Action Honoree by the Pioneer Valley Project.

The award is given by the faith and labor-based organization to an individual who exemplifies the words of the prophet Micah: "He has shown you what is good; And what does the Lord want of you but to do justice and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8)

Freedman, who is a teacher at the Environment Center for Our Schools (ECOS) in Forest Park, acknowledged many of his teaching colleagues, especially Clifford Phaneauf who helped open the ECOS center in 1970.
