SPRINGFIELD A new business in the city will create three new jobs, but also potentially a lot of peace of mind for people needing to care for their disabled or elderly relatives.

Caregiver Homes of Massachusetts has opened a Western Massachusetts office located at the Massachusetts Latino Chamber of Commerce at 1655 Main St.

Janice Masi, the Massachusetts executive director of Caregiver Homes, explained that Caregivers Home program allows seniors and the disabled to live with their families. People with relatives who need assistance apply to the program, which screens both the potential caregiver and the person needing care. If accepted, the caregiver is given training to provide around the clock care. The caregivers are paid for their service and are supported by a team of health professionals including a registered nurse and a case manager.

The patients must have MassHealth to qualify for the program.

Each day the caregiver writes notes about the patient into a Web-based information and monitoring service.

Masi said the program is an alternative to placing a loved one in a nursing home or an assisted living program.

The Springfield office will be supervised by Program Director Hilda Rivera and is expected to be located at the chamber offices for the next three to four months.

For more information on the program, contact Rivera at 426-5818.
