Oceanography Fair at Kiley Middle School

Sharing with her students her own interest in oceanography, Kiley Middle School English Language Arts teacher Trina Roberts recently assigned her students a research project. The result was a day-long oceanography fair at the school showcasing the students' research. "I have a huge interest in whales, orcas ... and I used to run the oceanography club after school," Roberts explained. She added that, with Springfield teachers sticking to the "work to rule" clause in their old contract and no longer participating in after school activities, she also saw this activity as a way to keep the students involved in something different and interesting. The assignment also served as a research and writing tool for the students. They each chose a marine animal, researched it, wrote a paper about it and made a visual display for the fair. In advance of the oceanography fair, the students listened to a marine biologist talk about his job, and they will meet him at his place of work before embarking on a whale watch in June. Shown here with their projects are sixth graders Melissa Nguyen, Lawanda Ross, Kyla Harris, and Savon Tucker.
