SPRINGFIELD The Leone family is doing their part to make clean drinking water available in developing nations. Leone's Restaurant will be participating in The Tap Project for World Water Week, March 16 through 22.

Patrons will have the opportunity to donate $1 for per glass of tap water. According to UNICEF, which heads the project, every $1 raised will give a child clean drinking water for 40 days.

According to information released by the Tap Project, "The little known truth is that lack of clean and accessible drinking water is the second largest worldwide killer of children under five."

That is certainly what prompted John Leone to get involved.

"I just thought, when I read it, 'It's the number two killer for children under five,'" Leone said about seeing the advertisement for the project in a magazine. "I think [the project] is a good idea to make people aware of that."

By 2015, UNICEF's goal is to reduce the number of people without safe water and basic sanitation by 50 percent.
