SPRINGFIELD Residents in the community of Sixteen Acres are awaiting final state budget approval that may allocate $400,000 to Greenleaf Community Center in Springfield. These funds would be in addition to the $200,000 that was also secured for the defunct center.

State Representative Sean Curran (D-Springfield) toured the facility with Sixteen Acres Civic Association President Clodo Concepcion.

Curran, along with many other local officials, like State Representative Gale Candaras (D-Springfield), worked to have funds allocated to restore the community center.

Repairs and renovations for the building have been estimated at $800,000.

"Hopefully the $400,000 will be on its way to the community center. That would be $600,000 worth of state money. This is a positive step in the right direction," Curran said.

The Parks Department currently uses the buildings' old gymnasium as a workspace.

Roof work has begun on the facility using the previously secured $200,000.

As of press time an additional $400,000 in state funds had not been officially secured for Greenleaf Community Center.
