SPRINGFIELD — Interested in helping to determine what qualifications the new superintendent of schools should have? The School Committee is looking for you.

Vice Chair Christopher Collins explained during the committee’s meeting on Feb. 2 that there would be a series of public meetings to solicit input about the new superintendent and to recruit people to serve on the committee that will finalize the requirements for candidates.

There will be a meeting at Central High School from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 for all School Department staff and one on Feb. 9 at Central High School from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for any students who wish to comment.

There will be another meeting for the general public at the Rebecca Johnson School in Mason Square from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 13. Collins said there would be two more public meetings scheduled as well as one just for city businesses.

There will also be a survey that will be on-line as well as in the city’s libraries for the general public to list its preferences. The survey will also be translated into Spanish.

Collins said the search is “a very, very serious endeavor.”

School Committee member Antonette Pepe also noted the committee will be receiving the assistance of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees in the search.

Collins said there would be 13 people chosen to determine the qualifications and Mayor Domenic Sarno called the time commitment for the committee members as “serious.”

Collins said if a committee member misses a single meeting they would be asked to step down.

Sarno called the timeline to hire the replacement for out-going Dr. Alan Ingram as “aggressive.” The intention is to have the new superintendent in place before the end of the school year.
