SPRINGFIELD Mayor Domenic Sarno may have competition should he choose to run for re-election next year. City Councilor Jose Tosado told Reminder Publications he would decide by February whether or not to run for the office.

Tosado said he is "taking a serious look at running, but I haven't decided completely. I'm exploring the opportunity."

He said he would make a definite decision by February to allow himself enough time to raise funds for a citywide race.

He said that he doesn't think the major issues facing the city have really changed so far under Sarno.

Although he noted the city is in a better financial situation than four years ago the current economic crisis may affect the new police class. He is concerned the present economic problems may extend until 2010 or 2012.

His concerns for the future come in part from his position as a state manager. Tosado said he is responsible for millions of dollars and has been developing scenarios responding to potential cuts.

He said he is concerned about keeping business in Springfield.

"There's a number of businesses thriving. Let's grow and foster what we have. I don't think that's been done well," he said.

Tosado did express a certain hesitation about running for mayor and leaving the City Council the year when ward representation would return to the city. Calling him himself "the driving force on the City Council" for reform, Tosado said, "I would be excited to serve in the mixed system."
