WEST SPRINGFIELD -- College is expensive but an interest in history could lighten the load. The Ramapogue Historical Society is accepting applications for the Katherine McIntire Award from students who have a passion for history.

McIntire, a town librarian, a member of the Historical Commission and the Ramapogue Historical Society, had a strong interest in the history and development of West Springfield. Her interests, knowledge and dedication led to her appointment as town historian.

Noreen Tassinari, director of Marketing for Eastern States Exposition, said McIntire was a terrific woman.

"She had knowledge on all forms of history -- she was the go-to person when it came to the town of West Springfield," she said.

The McIntire Award, sponsored by her family, is a monetary recognition of $250. Applicants must be residents of West Springfield and graduate from a public or private high school this year. Students applying must plan on attending college and pursuing an interest that includes historical studies.

Bernie Lally, West Springfield town historian, said everything he knows came from McIntire.

"She was the nicest person that I have ever known. She never said a bad thing about anybody," he said. "She was always positive and upbeat, she never criticized [anyone] -- she was just the nicest person going."

Application forms can be found in the guidance offices at the local public and private secondary schools or by contacting Tassinari at 205-5037 or ntassinari@thebige.com.

Deadline for submission is April 15.

The McIntire Award will be presented on May 12 at the Annual Meeting of the Ramapogue Historical Society at the Mittineague Methodist Church on Amostown Road.
