WEST SPRINGFIELD - Bonnie Strange of the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative (LPVEC) will be finishing her senior year by leaving a mark on teachers and contemporaries as the most outstanding student for her school.

"It feels good," Strange said. Dr. Daniel Plourde, teacher of landscaping and horticulture technology, nominated Strange for the 2007 Outstanding Vocational Technical Student Award. The award is one that is distributed annually to area vocational students in Massachusetts.

"She really likes plants. It is rare to have a student come in and have an appreciation and passion for it [horticulture]," Plourde said.

"It is a big honor. She is number one in our school," Donald Jarvis, head teacher at the LPVEC, said to Reminder Publications. "This is an awesome opportunity for students." Plourde will be giving a speech about Strange at the April 12 Assabet Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School Annual Awards Banquet at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. Strange, along with 49 students, from Massachusetts vocational schools will be receiving citations from Governor Deval Patrick and Commissioner of Education David P. Driscoll congratulating them.

Strange plans on attending State University of New York (SUNY) in the fall and has already received acceptance into the SUNY Cobleskill (School of Agriculture) and awaits acceptance into the Ranger School of Environment.

Strange said she plans on pursuing a professional degree in landscape architecture at SUNY.

"It is basically drawing out [landscape] designs and creating designs for people," Strange said.

Strange's advice for current and future students in school, "do what you're told and you will have lots of opportunity."

The award is one organized by the Vocational Association (MVA) and Association of Vocational Administrators (MAVA).
