WEST SPRINGFIELD – The Old Merrick Pharmacy will soon become the new home of the police substation.

This past week, the town’s offer to purchase the building located at 389 Main St., for $240,000 was accepted. The town intends to use Community Development funds to acquire the 3,200 square-foot property.

“It’s a unique opportunity because it’s next to the Alice Corson Playground,” Mayor Edward Sullivan said.

He explained that the plan is to move the police substation and Community Development office to the site. “It would enhance the visibility of the neighborhood policing program,” Sullivan said

He added that the Community Development Department pays rent for its current location, which would then be paid to the town once moved.

Sullivan anticipated the police substation wouldn’t be moved until this fall. At this time, no future plan for the site of the current substation is in the works.

The mayor said he does not foresee andy additional costs associated with the move.
