High School to celebrate official opening

Date: 5/1/2015

WEST SPRINGFIELD – Though students and teachers have been calling the new West Springfield High School home for more than a year, the city will celebrate its official opening May 16.

Superintendent of Schools Michael Richard said the district is excited to finally present the school to the community.

“It really is exciting. It’s going to mark the idea that the school is really, really ready and 100 percent functional,” Richard said. “It’s nice that it wasn’t done prematurely. We would rather have it been lived in. It’s a house warming. We’ve lived in there a year. We’ve studied. We’ve learned. We’ve had our ups and downs, but we figured it out.”

The dedication ceremony will include guest speakers, guided tours by high school students, light refreshments and musical accompaniment by the high school band, Richard said. Among those invited include Mayor Edward Sullivan, school committee members, state Sen. James Welch, state Rep. Mike Finn and the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

The day will be “a relaxing time to celebrate the actual completion,” Richard said. The public is invited, and the dedication will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Donations of nonperishable food will also be collected for the Parish Cupboard.
