Yuletide at Storrowton brings history to life

WEST SPRINGFIELD - An annual tradition, "Yuletide at Storrowton," came alive at Storrowton Village from Dec. 2 through Dec. 9.

The event in its 18th year, involved local garden clubs and florists decorating the 18th and 19th century buildings of the village with floral designs and members of the public were invited to take part in tours that occurred throughout the week.

The tours were complete with gingerbread cooking demonstrations in kettles and fiddlers performing. Each tour is about one- hour long.

"The Yuletide is always the first full week of December," Dennis Picard, museum director said to Reminder Publications.

The West Springfield Garden Club decorated the Potter House with the help of various other garden clubs like Grandmothers' Garden in Westfield.

The old law office was decorated with oranges and flowers designed by Anthony Cappeli, a floral designer from North Granby, CT.

The school house, one of the only surviving one-room school houses in the country, was decorated by the Agawam Garden Club with an ocean design. The house was originally used in Whately from 1810-1926.

"They volunteer their materials and their time," Picard said. "We appreciate their effort."

There are special events at Storrowton throughout the year. In January and March there will be "Maple Sugar Days." Drop-in tours will start again in June.

Schools also send classes to Storrowton through the year. Picard said schools come to visit Storrowton from as far north as Vermont.

New floral artists and clubs are invited into the Yuletide although spacing is limited. For more information call Storrowton at 205-5051.
