news@thereminder.comWESTFIELD – Kevin Medeiros is running for at-large city councilor in Westfield and said frankly he isn’t interested in being a “long term politician.”
“I’m like a Navy SEAL: go in there, get the job done and get out,” he told
Reminder Publications.
He continued, “I’m not trying to make a ton of money or a ton of friends.”
Medeiros, who considers himself semi-retired, is a veteran of the hospitality industry and he worked for Howard Johnson in a variety of managerial roles for more than 39 years. He has lived in Westfield a majority of his life, although he graduated from Chester High School in 1968.
He believes the skills in customer serviced he learned during his career will serve him well in the City Council.
“I hate procrastination,” he said. “I think can make a difference [working] with the personalities if nothing else.”
He said that council meetings can be “almost like divorce court.” He said that because of his time as a resident plus that his late brother Charles was a member of the City Council for 32 years he knows many members of the council.
This is not his first run for office. Two years ago he sought, but lost the Ward 1 seat on the council.
While he may not have been in public office before, Medeiros said that he has worked on projects such as raising funds for the Southampton Road Elementary School playground.
He said he has several main issues and the first one is the Ashley Street School project. He is also following the progress of the Pochassic Street Bridge that links to the Drug Store Hill.
One element of his campaign is not typical of most as Medeiros said that he would serve probably only one term, two at the very most.
“I want to win and do the job,” he said and added if he doesn’t win “I’m not going to jump off the Great River Bridge.”
Medeiros stressed, “My goal is to do the best I can.”
