Local businesses raise almost $1,000 for resident battling Lyme disease

Date: 8/13/2015

WILBRAHAM –  Jennifer Corey (center left), a woman suffering from late stage neurological Lyme disease, received a $928 check on Aug. 7 from nine local businesses in the Wilbraham Shops on Boston Road that rallied together to support Corey, who has incurred thousands of dollars of medical bills due to her illness.

The businesses donated 10 percent of their sales on July 10 and had donation jars available through July.

Sherry Coulis (third from the left), owner of Oh So Pretties Handcrafted Gifts, said she thought of the fundraiser idea after reading a June article regarding Corey’s condition by Reminder Publications.

The list of participating businesses included The Scented Garden Gift Shop, Common Grounds Café of Wilbraham, Lately Liz Boutique, Pops Biscotti and Chocolates, Theme Cakes by Joelene, Hurley’s Children Cottage, Oh So Pretties Handcrafted Gifts, and Wilbraham Tanning.

Corey, who received hyperthermia treatment in Germany seven weeks ago, said she is about 40 percent better and is now able to be more active than in the past year.

She added that prior to her treatment she was bedridden almost every day.

“Last year there was no progress,” Corey said. “Now I have ups and downs.”

Corey also has a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised $7,925 out of its $10,000 goal as of Aug. 10. For more information and to donate to Corey’s fundraiser visit www.gofundme.com/jencoreylyme.
