Falcon Youth Football gears up for another season

~ Submitted by Coach Don Perkins

Although it seems like football season just ended, it is time to sign up for another season of Falcon Youth Football.

The Falcon Youth Football program is run by the Falcon Youth Football Association and is for young men and women entering grades 3 thru 8.

The Falcon Youth Football Association is a member of the Suburban Amateur Football League, which organizes the youth football program for the greater Springfield area. Approximately 140-150 players participate in Falcon Youth Football program each season and over 95 percent of these players return each year. This return rate speaks a lot about the program.

The Falcon Youth Football Association is dedicated to provide young men and women the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of tackle football and enjoy playing a "true" team sport. The coaching staff continually emphasizes the importance of teamwork, while teaching the concepts of sportsmanship, work ethic, discipline and respect for other players as well as themselves (to name a few...). The Falcon Youth Football Association's ultimate goal is for each player to have fun.

Falcon Youth Football facilities are located at Spec Pond. All of the practices and the home games are held at these facilities. Practices start the first or second week of August. Practices are usually 3 days per week until school starts. Once school starts, practices are reduced to two days per week, with games on Friday night, Saturday or Sunday. The season ends the last week of October.

The Falcon Youth Football Association recognizes that many parents and guardians usually have questions regarding a sport, but normally do not have the opportunity to get these questions answered before signing up. Therefore, the association will be sponsoring a "Anything You Want to Know About Falcon Youth Football" night on Monday, June 6th at 6:30 p.m. at the new Wilbraham Senior Center (Note: Same building as the Wilbraham YMCA).

The head coaches, members of the association and the Wilbraham Parks & Recreation department will give a presentation regarding the Falcon Youth Football Program and will answer questions. The association strongly encourages parents of first time players attend this meeting. Applications will be available at the meeting.

Wilbraham Recreation Department will be holding open enrollment for Falcon Youth Football from June 1 through June 17. Applications can be picked up at the Wilbraham Recreation Departments.

If you have any questions, please contact the Wilbraham Recreation Department at 596-2816.
