HAMPDEN Despite the closure of the Hampden Senior Center, a group of seniors in town are still meeting, organizing, and having fun.

The Scantic Senior Citizens Club, which has been around for more than 20 years, is a private social organization for seniors living in Hampden.

Club President Kathleen Flynn told The Reminder last week that, while the group is saddened by the closure of the Senior Center, where they used to host meetings and participate in other programs, they are continuing to meet at members' houses and other locations.

"[The Scantic Senior Citizens Club] provides some social outlets for seniors," Flynn said. "We have a meeting of some sort every month with a speaker or social event like going out to dinner."

She also said the Club hosts annual Christmas parties at The Hampden House and a November luncheon at Wilbraham Country Club.

Their first meeting of the year is scheduled for Sept. 21 in the Town Hall auditorium at 1 p.m.. The guest speaker will be Senator Brian Lees. At this meeting, Club Treasurer Shirley Gouvan will collect the dues ($5 a year).

If anyone is interested in joining the Scantic Senior Citizens Club, they may contact any member or call Kathleen Flynn at 747-6010.
