Wilbraham forms Major Projects Committee

WILBRAHAM The Town of Wilbraham has launched a review of large capital projects currently under consideration by various boards and committees. Selectmen have appointed one of their own to join representatives from the town's Capital Planning Committee, Finance Committee, Planning Board and general public to a Major Projects Committee to develop a list of potential projects for review and public comment. The committee will also provide recommendations on setting priorities among projects and a schedule for bringing them forward for voter consideration.

The committee is chaired by Capital Planning Committee Chairman Robert Quintin and includes Selectman James Thompson, Capital Planning and Finance Committee members Susan Bunnell and Patrick Brady, Capital Planning Committee member Michael Mazzuca, Planning Board members Christopher Leisey and Richard Butler and two residents not currently serving on other committees Adam Basch and Michael Julian.

"The committee met over the summer and developed a list of projects that we believe are likely to come forward in the next several years," Quintin stated. "We plan to hold a series of public meetings where the project sponsors provide briefings and town residents are invited to comment and ask questions. Ultimately we will provide Selectmen and the town with recommendations regarding the various projects. We may also provide comments on related issues such as facility maintenance."

The committee will begin its schedule of public forums on Sept. 15 beginning at 7 p.m. in the choral room at Minnechaug Regional High School. Wilbraham Public Works Director Edmond Miga and school officials will discuss the possible extension of the town's sewer system to include the high school.

Superintendent of Schools Paul Gagliarducci will also provide an update on the proposed construction of a new high school, although an in-depth discussion of that project will be the focus of a future meeting.

"We encourage interested residents to attend this meeting, hear the briefing, ask questions and give their opinions," Quintin stated.

Future forums will review the following projects:

Renovation and expansion of the Wilbraham Public Library.

Construction of a new high school.

Construction of a police/fire public safety building.

Road and sidewalk paving and drainage.

Renovations to Memorial Elementary School.

Renovations to Foskit Memorial Hall (formerly the Grange Hall).
