Amherst town manager updates council on police chief search

Date: 7/25/2023

AMHERST — With Captain Gabriel Ting currently serving as interim police chief, the town of Amherst is continuing their search for candidates to fill the role on a permanent basis.

At the July 17 council meeting, Town Manager Paul Bockelman told councilors they would be asked to participate in one-on-one interviews with the prospective consulting firm that would assist in the recruitment process for a new chief.

According to Bockelman, community participation in the selection process will then follow Illinois based GovHR’s discussions with committee members and other town officials.

“We’ve decided to hold on the public outreach until after Labor Day,” Bockelman said. “Since we’ve gotten a little bit later start than we anticipated we don’t think that it would be wise to do public outreach during August so that will put us back a little bit but we’re still going to try and move forward on it, we can get a lot of the interviews, the one-on-one interviews done in advance of that.”

Ting, a 26-year police veteran has been serving in the interim role since the end of May when Police Chief Scott Livingstone retired after 46 years with the town, the 14 years as chief.

No candidates for the permanent police chief position have been revealed.
