Domb receives Legislator of the Year honors

Date: 10/24/2023

AMHERST — A Massachusetts nonprofit organization has recognized State Representative Mindy Domb (D-Amherst) with a 2023 Award of Excellence.
The Providers’ Council, an association of community-based human services agencies in the state, presented the award at its 48th Annual Convention in Boston on Oct. 2.

The association has more than 220 members made up primarily of nonprofit, community-based organizations that provide human services, health, education and vocational support to one-in-ten residents of the commonwealth.

In submitting the nomination for Domb as Legislator of the Year, Lev BenEzra, executive director of the Amherst Survival Center said. “Since she took office in 2019, Rep. Mindy Domb has been a champion for issues of food security and other basic needs.”

Calling her a grounded, thoughtful, intelligent and strategic partner, BenEzra said, “Rep. Domb is an effective advocate, bringing state resources to the region, including funding to stabilize Amherst Survival Center Food Pantry inventory during and since the pandemic, funding for the Amherst Mobile Market, and support for youth mental health in the schools.”

Domb, who worked in the human service sector before her 2018 election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, is the former executive director of the Amherst Survival Center, a position she held from 2013-2018.

In response to her selection, Domb said she was humbled by the nomination as well as the award, “For me, human service providers and the services and connection they offer our neighbors are essential and often life-saving. They strengthen our bonds to one another and build community. The people who work and volunteer in organizations like the Amherst Survival Center show up every day to make sure that our neighbors get the resources they need, they fight for the dignity of each person, and they make a place for everyone. The participants in these programs are the real heroes, showing up to find services and resources that can help make their situations better. It’s an honor to be in a position to support human service providers, their services and my neighbors who participate in their programs.”

Domb was recognized along with State Senator Jason Lewis (D-Middlesex), who also received the 2023 Legislator of the Year award.
